Bocas del Toro has become one of the main tourist attractions in Panama. It is an archipelago located on the Caribbean coast and consists of 9 islands, the largest of which is Isla Colon . There we find the provincial capital, a city that is also called Bocas del Toro. The Island is the perfect tourist place to stay, it has hotels, hostels, bars, restaurants, shops … etc. To move around the Island it is advisable to rent a bicycle or a quad; while to go from one island to another or visit the cays there are boats and water taxis destined for that function.
In the northern part of Isla Colón, there is Boca del Drago , obligatory stop point. It has beautiful Caribbean landscapes, cabins to relax and restaurants where to try the typical cuisine. Also very close we find one of the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago, Playa Estrella or beach of the stars, where you can bathe with starfish (hence its name).
Taking a water taxi from there we can visit Isla Pájaros , also called Cayo Cisne , a place famous for the large number of bird species that live there or migrate. It is considered a tropical bird sanctuary in which you can spot pelicans, terns, frigate birds, swallows and gannets, in addition to the famous red-billed chough.
Without moving from the same island you can visit the small village of Colonia Santeña , which houses a charming corner. It is the Grotto of the Virgin , a small altar with a figurine of the Virgin Mary presides over a spring and a cave full of bats by candlelight.
Another island of great importance in Bocas del Toro (although all have their particular charm), is Bastimentos. On its southwest side the Isla Bastimentos National Park begins, which spans a large number of small islands and cays. Among them are the Zapatilla Cays , two islands with lush forests and white sand beaches. Its calm crystalline waters are ideal for snorkeling and diving. We can enjoy corals and a variety of fish as well as lobsters, crabs and turtles.
